수평선을 마주하러 가는 길

최근 부산과 울산을 잇는 해안선을 따라 상업 건축이 활발하게 지어지고 있다. 도심에서 느낄 수 없는 경험을 향유하고 싶은 사람들의 수요가 반영된 모습이다. 이 수요를 배경으로 하는 건축물은 대부분 유행을 따르거나 지나친 상업성을 띠고 있는데, 건축가 입장에서는 안타까운 마음이 들면서도 그것을 극복하고 싶은 도전의식을 가지게 된다. 카페 리베리베는 울산 간절곶에 위치한 카페 겸 주택 프로젝트다. 대지 길이는 100m, 너비는 12~18m로 전체적으로 좁고 길다. 그리고 대지의 동쪽에는 송림, 대나무, 아카시아 등으로 울창한 숲이 있고 남쪽에는 간절곶 해안이 펼쳐져 있다. 400m 앞에 있는 이 바다를 어떻게 하면 방문객이 극적으로 만날 수 있을까?

간절곶으로 향하는 시퀀스

해안과 직교하는 좁고 긴 모양의 대지에 맞게 동선 전략을 계획했다. 해안 반대쪽 도로로 진입해 바다를 조망할 수 있는 수공간까지 세 개의 시퀀스를 설정했다. 시퀀스는 진입 영역, 건축화된 인공 영역, 자연을 만나는 외부 영역으로 나눠지고, 공간에서 돌출된 벽들은 공간의 켜를 만든다. 각 영역 사이에는 내외부 풍경이 연결되는 공간이 있는데 이곳에서 사람들은 건축을 감상하고, 자연을 듣고, 풍경과 교감한다. 여러 경험을 연결해주는 산책길에는 2.1m의 고저 차를 활용한 수로가 설치되었는데, 이 수로는 물의 낙차에서 생기는 음향 경관이 될 뿐만 아니라 이후 동선에서 등장하는 수공간의 물 순환을 돕는다. 수로를 따라 건축화된 인공 영역에 다다르면 선큰공간과 건축물의 입구가 있다. 실내로 들어가면 긴 복도가 있는데 그 끝에는 앞서 말한 수공간이 펼쳐진다. 수공간은 하늘과 바다를 담는 요소다. 우리는 수공간을 통해 하늘과 바다의 경계를 모호하게 만드는 이미지를 구현하려고 했다. 수공간에 담긴 물의 높이를 바다의 수평선에 일치하도록 설계했고, 정돈되지 않은 관광지 환경을 조경으로 가렸다. 그리고 1층에서는 수공간을 통해 바다가 건축에 들어오는 방식을 적용했다면, 2층에서는 베란다를 넓게 계획하여 건축이 바다로 향하는 방식을 적용했다.

상업과 주거의 혼재 

원래 이 대지에는 카페 리베리베가 들어서기 이전에 건축주가 운영하던 카페가 있었다. 건축주는 그것을 허물고 토지를 추가로 매입하여 프로젝트를 진행했다. 그는 상업과 주거가 함께 있는 건축물을 의뢰하면서, 일과 삶의 균형을 위해 두 기능이 명확하게 구분되는 구성을 요구했다. 주거 공간이 상업 공간으로 향하는 길과 반대인 ㄷ자 형태로 배치된 이유다. 그리고 진입부에 수공간을 조성하여 카페로 향하는 산책길과 주거 공간으로 가는 사잇길을 구분했다. 이를 통해 상업 공간에 방문한 사람이 주거 공간을 인지하기 어렵도록 만들었다. 그 사잇길로 들어가면 중정이 있다. 이 중정은 카페로 인해 창을 적극적으로 설치하지 못하는 주거 공간에 채광을 도입한다. 또한 주거 공간에 적용된 천창은 하늘로 열린 내부 지향의 주거를 제안한다. 이렇게 카페 리베리베는 상업과 주거가 혼재되어 있지만 공간을 구분하는 장치가 있어 건축주의 프라이버시를 보호한다.

A Way on the Horizon

Many commercial buildings have recently been built along the coastline between Busan and Ulsan. It reflects people's desire to break away from the city centre. However, most designs either blindly following perceived trends or are excessively commercial. It leads architects to feel obliged to revert to earlier fads. CAFE' LIEBELIEBE is a cafe'-and-housing project located in Ganjeolgot cape, Ulsan. The project site is 100m long and 12-18m wide, so long and narrow. On this eastern side of the site there are dense forests of pine forests, bamboo and acacia trees, and the coast of Ganjeolgot cape to the south. How should visitors be expected to make contact with an ocean 400m before them?

The sequence was planned according to the long and narrow site conditions perpendicular to the ocean. There are three sections, before reaching the water, where visitors can enjoy the ocean view after entering the opposite side of the ocean. The sequence consists of an entry area, a constructed artificial area, and the outer area where people can enjoy nature, and protruding walls create layers of spaces. There is a place where people can enjoy the connected scenery, both from the inside and outside. People experience architecture, listen to nature, and interact with the natural landscape. The walkway, which links multiple experiences, has been set up with a 2.1m-high waterway that not only provides the acoustic background of falling water but also helps the water circulation within the water that later emerges. As soon as you reach the artificial area along the waterway, you will find the Sunken Space and an entrance to the building. Entering the room, there is a long hallway, and the aforementioned water space unfolds. The expanse of water is an element that embraces the sky and the sea. We tried to embody images through an expanse that blurs the boundaries between the sky and the sea. Therefore, the height of the water was designed to match the horizon of the sea, and the untidy tour-sites environment remains as a part of the landscape. On the first floor, the ocean is connected to the house via the water space, and on the second floor, the veranda is planned widely to put architecture towards the sea.

A Mixture of Commercial and Residential Spaces

Originally, there was a cafe' run by the client before CAFE' LIEBELIEBE. The client demolished the former cafe' and bought additional land to proceed with the current project. She commissioned a building where commercial and residential spaces could coexist, requesting a clear separation of the two functions to balance work and life. Thus, residential space was placed in a U-shaped form, contrary to the attitude towards the commercial space. And a water space was installed at the entrance to distinguish the route to the cafe' from the route to the residential area. This made it difficult for visitors to recognise residential space. There is also a road between which leads to the courtyard. The courtyard welcomes sunlight into the residential area where there is a limited number of windows due to the cafe' outside. In the residential area, it applies a skylight, proposing an open interior-oriented dwelling. All of these characteristics made CAFE' LIEBELIEBE consist of both commercial and residential spaces, but it protects clients' privacy by separation schemes between commercial and residential areas.
